Conflict, meaning problems thrown in the characters’ ways and obstacles to overcome, are what make a story. If everything is fine and dandy, there is no story to tell.
Goals are what give characters their drive, and motivations can help make them more relatable. In any good story, you need to provide the reader, viewer or listener with all these things.
With this deck of writing prompt cards you get all three. The idea is simple: shuffle the cards into three decks, then draw a conflict, goal and motivation. Put the cards in this sentence:
Their goal is to [GOAL CARD] because [MOTIVATION CARD] but [CONFLICT CARD].
This gives you a one-sentence prompt to work with. The cards have been designed to work interchangeably – you can replace a card with another for a completely different prompt and story to tell!

Three types of poker sized cards with clear icons on the back to identify them. The red color shows that the cards are from the Conflicts, Goals & Motivations deck.
30 goals and 30 motivations to apply to new and existing characters.
30 conflicts, or problems to overcome, to subject your characters to.
A convenient box that closes via a hook on the back, to safely store all cards. Inside the box are printed instructions for a standard exercise.
Now try to switch the cards in the above examples. For example, read the first card in the last example, middle card in the middle example, and third card in the top example: “Their goal is to get married because they need money but someone has discovered their plan and wants to stop them.”
